The following instruction are for removing and replacing the motor, pump and motor coupler on Whirlpool made top loading washers including Kenmore top load washers
Before you begin verify that the washer is unplugged from the electrical power
1. To access the internal components of the machine remove the screws at the base of the console.
2. Grab the console by the base and pull it forward a quarter of an inch and flip it up.
3. Unplug the lid switch from the body of the machine.
4. The body of the machine is held in place by two clips.
Use a flathead screwdriver and stick it into the lip of the clip and pry it back.
5. Remove the body from the machine by lifting the lid and grabbing the front with your hand. Rock it back toward you, and brace it with your knee and lift it back.
6. Next, to remove the pump, locate the two clips on the motor. With a flathead screwdriver, pry each clip away from the pump. Turn the clip 90 degrees to remove it from the slot in the motor.
7. Next use a pair of pliers to remove the spring clamps securing the hoses to the pump.
8. To remove the motor first remove the electrical connection.
9. Then use a ¼ inch nut driver to remove the screws that hold the clips to the motor
10. Now use a flathead screwdriver to pry the metal clips away from the motor
11. Whenever the motor is replaced a new coupler should be installed. Appliance Parts Experts recommends using the heavy-duty commercial coupler part number 285852A
12. The old coupler can be split using a large screwdriver and a hammer.
13. Use a large socket to tap the replacement coupler on the transmission and motor shafts. Some technicians apply a small amount of petroleum jelly or grease on the shaft to ensure that the new coupler is not damaged during installation
