If you’re anything like us, it might still feel a little too early to really dive into your spring cleaning & home maintenance. Depending on where you are, there might even still be snow on the ground.
So, we’ll save the full on spring cleaning tips for now and instead we’ve got a few pre-spring tips to help start to get your home in shape for the warmer weather and make that cleaning a little easier when you’re ready.
Outside the house:
Exterior - Once the snow has melted, try to take a walk around the outside of your home and check for any damage from over the winter. Look for things like pulled up shingles, crumbling brick, or cracks in the sidewalk / driveway.
Gutters – Again, check for damage. With spring rain showers coming you want to make sure your gutters are in tip-top shape. Clear out any blockages like leaves, sticks, or lingering ice.
Dryer Vent – Clear anything that may be blocking your exterior vent like sticks or other debris that may have collected there.
Inside the house:
Furnace Filter – Now is a great time to either replace (or clean depending on your model) the air filter for your furnace. After a few months of using it regularly, it’s likely pretty dirty. You’ll also want to vacuum the vents or registers to really clear things up.
More Filters – If you didn’t swap out your AC unit’s filter at the end of the summer, now is also a good time to do that. You might also want to check on your range hood’s grease filter and the water filter in your fridge. If it’s been a while, it’s probably time to replace them both too.
Refrigerator – Along with checking the filter, toss out anything expired and any food still lingering from early fall.
Ducting – Right now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment to have your ducts inspected and cleaned. Just give your local technician a call.
Lint Trap – Even if you clear your lint filter off regularly, you’ll still want to clear out the trap a few times a year. With the right tools, this is relatively easy. We also recommend rinsing your lint filter with a little soap and warm water.
Oven – You’ve likely got some time before your next holiday meal, so now is the ideal time to run a self-clean cycle for your oven. The best part about this is that you don’t have to do anything other than be home while it runs.
Garbage Disposal – This is another easy one. Just toss a few ice cubes and cut up lemon rinds into the disposal and run it. This will freshen things up & sharpen the blades at the same time.
