Remodeling Your Kitchen: Determining the Right Layout

Unfortunately, kitchens were not designed with our personal style in mind. So, where do you even begin? What is the first step? One of the first steps is to determine what type of appliances you need and where the best place is to put them. Find out how to layout your perfect remodeled kitchen!

1.      Remember the Kitchen Triangle:

    • The kitchen “work triangle” is a concept used to determine the best layout for your kitchen. It is done by focusing on three main points in your kitchen, typically the sink, refrigerator and cook top. This concept is designed with ease of cooking in mind so you won’t be too far from kitchen essentials.

2.      Consider your counters:

    • Counter space is highly valuable, especially for home cooks. Limited counter space is a hassle, so make sure to remodel your kitchen with consideration to the size of the counter tops. Before, choosing the size or material, think about how you use your kitchen and what area you use most. Also, the material of the counter top is very important based on the style you envision your kitchen.

3.      Storage: you want to keep your kitchen without clutter; here are some examples of storage options.

    • Built-in Pantries: Food storage is important, especially with big families. Have your pantry built near the counter space used for food prep; this will make the food in your pantries more accessible.
    • Open Shelf Cabinets: This style is trendier and for those who like to show off their neatly stacked cups, bowls, snacks etc. and it allows for easy access to your necessities!
    • Closed Cabinets: This is a more traditional style cabinet with a door to hide all your food stored. This style is a clean design and for those who would rather not show off their storage.

4.      Picking a shape that works:

    • U-shaped kitchens are great for people who love to cook, it allows the chef to work around the main areas and have access to the supplies they need.
    • G-shaped kitchens have an extra leg of counter space compared to U-shaped.
    • L-shaped kitchens are a loft-style kitchen that is in a shape of an L! The open space allows multiple people in the kitchen at once and has room for a table or kitchen island.
    • A gallery kitchen set up consists of counters and appliances set up parallel with a narrow space in between the two walls. This layout is great for smaller spaces.

5.      Kitchen Islands:

    • Islands are perfect for those who want more counter space, extra seating, and more storage. Kitchen islands are a great accessory but kitchens layouts like small gallery or G-shaped are not designed for it. If a kitchen island does fit in your layout, design it to match the rest of your kitchen.
