Yes, it’s almost that time again. It’s hard to believe it went by so fast, but unfortunately it did. Don’t let it get you down though because here are a few things to remember when doing this activity. Here it is, it’s almost time to clean and take out the air conditioners.
It is actually important to keep up on the maintenance of the window installed air conditioners. Mold and bacteria can grow inside and around the vents which means when the machine is on, the mold and bacteria can spread. So if you will be cleaning out the window air conditioner, here are a few materials and tips on how to do so.
First, the materials that will be needed are:
Protective eyewear
Face mask
Gloves
Water
Laundry detergent
Bleach
Mild dish soap
Bucket
Cloth
Scrub brush
Screwdriver
Vacuum cleaner
Safety Tip: Before removing or working on the air conditioner, please make sure to unplug the power source
The first thing you want to do is put on all of the safety materials. Then you’ll need to unplug the appliance from the power source. Then you’ll need to take off the front grille. Remove the filter that is located in the air conditioners front grille area.
If the filter is washable, place the filter in the sink and spray a little bit of laundry detergent. Fill the sink with hot water until it completely covers the filter. Leave the filter in the water for about 15 minutes, then use the scrub brush for both sides, rinse and then hang dry.
Now that the filter is taken care of, go back to the air conditioner and remove the metal cover behind the front grille and lift it upwards. Now use the vacuum attachments to scoop up anymore dust or debris that has been left in there. Then wipe up anything else left over.
Furthermore, fill the bucket with a ½ a cup of bleach, 1 tablespoon of mild dish soap and the rest with hot water. Stir it well and then scrub the rest of the unit with the cloth, brush or sponge. After scrubbing let the solution sit on the appliance, then it can be rinsed.
Let the filter and the machine completely dry until reassembling and plugging it back in. This is a good way to keep the machine clean as well as have it ready for next year.
