How To Properly Load Your Washer

Posted by The Appliance Parts Experts on 3/3/2016 to Appliance Maintenance

Loading your laundry the wrong way could potentially damage both your clothing and your washer. In efforts to prevent your clothes from being dyed colors you didn’t ask for and your washer from needing all kinds of new parts, take care of them both and you won’t have to worry!

When loading your clothing, make a habit out of checking all pockets to ensure there is nothing in them. Leaving change and other small objects in your pockets can get stuck in the drain pump and cause serious damage and clanking in your unit. Other precautionary steps to take are: zipping up all zippers, tying all drawstrings, unbuttoning all buttons, unrolling all cuffs, and turning dark clothing and pockets inside out.

To avoid overloading and underloading your washer, take notice of the loading directions found in your owner’s manual. Make sure you are not putting too many clothes in at a time; the wash tub should not be more than three-quarters full, if it is, take some things out! When clothes are too packed in the wash, you run the risk of items coming out with detergent not rinsed out thoroughly or not getting washed at all.

The proper order of steps in loading/washing is: detergent, laundry items, and then fill with water. Following this order will reduce sudsing and protect your clothing from the detergent sitting in for too long. Do not use more detergent than you need, especially if you have a high-efficiency washer. High-efficiency units use less water than older models; therefore they don’t require as much detergent to get the job done.

When you use too much detergent, extra suds are created. Suds hold onto more odors and bacteria, which ends up leaving a residue all over the inside of your wash. This residue begins to affect all your other laundry loads causing colors to fade, and dirt and bacteria buildup. If you have a detergent dispenser, be sure to use it. The dispenser dispenses soap in the proper amounts and at the proper times during cycles.
