How to Paint Anything in your Home!

Spring is here and spring brings us spring cleaning and home renovation! Whether you are working on a small home project or a large home renovation, knowing how to properly paint your home will ensure it turns out the best! Painting is an easy DIY home improvement most homeowners take on by themselves. We are here to inform you on how to paint on various materials in your home such as metal, wood, laminate and more.

Choosing the Paint

There are three main paint types; water-based, latex paints, and oil-based paint. Water-based and latex paint is easier to apply and work with. It works best on ceilings, furniture, and walls and has a quick drying time. Oil-based paints are more durable than the other two paints but take longer to dry and are difficult to use. This paint is best used on trims and molding.

You may want to use spray paint on some of your projects because it is easy to use and can be used on various surfaces like glass, fabric, wood and more. Make sure to use spray paint in a ventilated area to protect from paint fumes. Spray paint can be used indoors and outdoors.

Metal

Convert any old, rusted, worn piece of metal into a brand new item with a fresh paint job. The first thing to do is preparation; use a stiff wire brush to remove dust, debris, and old paint. If the metal is very rusted, you may need to sand down the surface before you begin painting. Next, prime the surface with two coats of a high-quality primer that is made to prevent rust. Make sure the coats dry completely in between coats. Lastly, use high-gloss enamel paint to complete the piece of metal!

Wood

Depending on the piece of wood you are working on if it is furniture remove any hardware like knobs, hinges, screws, and other. First, wipe off a dust or debris and sand the wood with 80-grit sandpaper then work your way to a finer grit. After, remove any dirt with a cleaning cloth and a house cleaner. Then, apply two coats of stain blocking primer and let the coats dry in between. You can use a bristle brush or a roller brush, and even spray paint if you would like. Apply two coats of the paint and let the coats dry in between. Lastly, if you are painting furniture like a dresser, apply two coats of polyurethane.

Laminate

Painting on laminate is similar to painting on wood furniture. You have to remove any hardware on the furniture. Then, use fine grit sandpaper that is about 150-grit to sand the surface, but do not over sand! Next, remove any dust or debris with a clean soft cloth, than with a soft high-quality brush, apply two lights coats of primer. You have to allow the primer to dry an hour between coats. Lastly, using a roller or brush, paint the laminate piece with latex paint to have it become sleek and shiny.

Glass

Painting glass items in your home like vases, windows and decorative glass pieces add some character to your household! The first thing to do is to wash the glass piece with soap and warm water and let it thoroughly dry. Next, clean the glass with vinegar to ensure it is completely dry, this will make sure there is no residue or film leftover. Depending on the size of the glass piece, choose a brush compatible with the size and ones that are synthetic or natural hair bristles. There is no need for prime on these projects and choose acrylic enamel paint or regular enamel paint for glass projects.
